INNOCENCE

Innocence, such sweet emotion
Little hands clap, little legs dancing
Eyes wide with joy
Smiling and chortling with anticipation.
We strive to fulfill expectations
Encourage and call
Delighting in pure innocence.
We hold out arms to embrace
To hold tight and safe
And whisper “That’s fine, my darling”
And wish that innocence can last,
Because we only see it briefly
In the very young –
Before they discover how harsh life is.
And all too quickly innocence is over.
