THE FIREFLIES AND THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Two countries in the World
A million miles apart
Nepal has fireflies in its trees
England has Christmas trees and fairy lights.

In hot Nepal the tiny fireflies move and flicker
They flash and dart and shimmer
Their colours red +yellow, blue + green
They’re alive and float and glimmer.

In England cold and dark
The Christmas lights are static though they flash
And can be beautiful
But they are not alive + do not float, do not shimmer
They only appear for a month or so
In people’s homes.

In Nepal the fireflies are seen EVERY night
even in Monsoon –
They are there for everyone to see
And, against the backdrop of the Moon,
Each tree is a giant Christmas tree
Lit up by ever-moving points of light.

It is the most magical sight, to enthral
Beyond imagination.

England’s Christmas tree lights
Or fireflies in Nepal.

I know which I’d rather watch.
